Star Trek meets real world

Who would have thought the original series of Star Trek would have spawned so many gadgets that we take for granted today, like mobile phones and even medical equipment.

A team from Harborview and the university of Washington have been working on a device that is very similar to the tri corder device as used by the famous Dr McCoy and subsequent doctors from the long running sci fi series.

The device has been used to heal damaged lungs, and as it uses an ultrasound effect there is no surgery required, which means that this type of procedure can be done on a day surgery basis or even at the scene in the event of an accident.

The device is in its early stages of development but if this is proven to be a viable solution, then it may not be long before we see these sorts of devices being used for many procedures.
