Anti depression drug could help brain disease

UK medical staff are about to start trails on lithium which is common in drugs for treating depression, however this trial is not going to be a study of treating depression, but rather to see the effectiveness of the drug being able to treat the devastating condition motor neurone disease.

These trails will start in early 2009 and there will be over two hundred patients taking part in the eighteen month trial who will be given the lithium tablets in order to see what the long term effects of the treatment will be.

This treatment if successful is going to be extremely cost effective because a packet of twenty tablets only costs around 50p. However, for sufferers the cost is not an issue, finding a treatment would be a brilliant breakthrough.
