Nanodiamonds for drug delivery

Researchers from North-western University are playing with diamonds with a view to using them for the delivery of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy. These diamonds are only two nanometre in diameter the drug is loaded onto the surface, and then they are grouped into clusters of which change the size to around 50 to 100 nanometres across. As the cluster breaks apart the drug is slowly released.

Because of the structure of nano diamonds the surface area is larger than that of the conventional delivery system which means that the more drug can be administered in a more efficient way and therefore should be more effective.

Research has shown that the body does not reject the nano diamonds either, with no toxicity or inflammation this is beginning to look like a great way of administering this serious treatment.
