AT&T gives $1 million to Biomedical Research
The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR) has received a donation of $1 million from the AT&T foundation, this is to further the research at the AT&T Genomics Computing Centre.
The money will go towards the updating of the centres networking system, buy some new equipment - like 375 new four processor Opteron based computers and improve the power supply. Once completed the system will be enlarged from 1500 processors to 3000, all working in parallel together.
The centre itself looks for genes that influence susceptibility to complex human diseases, like brain & heart disorders and cancer. The earlier these genes are discovered the better, it is then when the hard work begins on looking for cures and relief for the diseases.
